Linux vs Mac OS X: Mac OS X wins

April 12, 2004 on 1:15 pm | In General |

I removed my post about installing Linux on the iBook because I am currently back with Mac OS X.

Although “Gentoo Linux”:http://www.gentoo.org is the distribution of choice thanks to the ease of resolving dependencies when installing applications in a FreeBSD-like manner, there were certain things that I needed but could not get to work. The most important one is the ability to connect the iPod to Linux. “gtkpod”:http://gtk.sf.net compiled successfully, but I did not manage to get Firewire working.

Half-way through a cycle of changing the configuration of and re-compiling the kernel, I realised that the reason I bought the iBook, and later upgraded to Panther, was that I wanted to not have to fiddle with things and just get everything working right from the start. So, I got rid of Linux and put back Mac OS X.

  1. I would say that is a wise decision. The only reason to install Linux is if it has some exclusive functionality you require, of you don’t mind spending considerable time getting things to work properly. I’m still planning to install Gentoo Linux on my Sharp Actius PC-MM10 laptop, but as I said before, it will be a dual-boot configuration, so I can always boot Windows, if I have a problem.

Only real problem with dual-booting is that I only have a 15 GB hard disk, and the Windows partition is only 5 GB. So, I can’t exactly load it up with software.

  2. As I said, I really liked Gentoo Linux. But, after this little week-end adventure, I was convinced that Linux was not ready for the desktop. It took me two days (Friday and Saturday) to get the setup _nearly_ as I wanted it to be. In contrast, it took me about three hours to get Mac OS X installed and ready for me to start working.

  3. Having used both Linux and Mac OS X extensively, I can’t imagine why one would want Linux when you already have Mac OS X? Mac OS X has far more polish to it (or at least does compared to Linux of a year ago), *and* has the ability to run just about any unix-ish app out there (with Fink Commander providing an easy way to get, build and install those apps).

I’d be curious to know why you were interested in switching from Mac OS X to Gentoo. Is there something really spiffy there that I’ve been missing?

  4. The main reason I wanted to install Linux was to get out better performance from the iBook. And, in fact, when Linux was running briefly, performance was much better than Mac OS X.
